OneRen is Renfrewshire’s local charitable trust providing leisure, culture and sporting opportunities to allow people in our communities to live lives that are healthy, happy and fulfilled.
Our award winning ArtBoss project works with care experienced young people and young carers to engage with the creative arts in Renfrewshire.
Care experienced children and young people often feel isolated, stigmatised and aren’t able to access mainstream education, services or activities at the same level as their non care experienced peers. Young carers have caring responsibilities of a parent, sibling or family member which has an impact on the free time they have to enjoy away from that role. They often have many pressures in their life.
Traditional and digital creative arts are a vehicle of self expression, it helps to build confidence, self esteem and inspire future learning or careers in the arts industry. It is so important that our care experienced young people and young carers in Renfrewshire are able to participate in the arts. To support care experienced young people and young carers engaging with the creative arts, OneRen and Renfrewshire Council Youth Services and Children’s Services created ArtBoss, a creative young producers’ project, currently funded by Future Paisley.
ArtBoss aims to develop skills for care experienced young people, young carers and young people who need support to improve their mental health and wellbeing to design and deliver arts cultural events, creative works and productions for their peers, singing, acting and crafting along the way. Often, normal art youth groups aren’t equipped to deal with the level of support young carers and care experienced young people need but ArtBoss has highly trained Arts Coordinators who offer an enhanced level of support, they understand each young person’s individual circumstances and work to manage any difficulties, for example arranging transport to and from ArtBoss or support with respite breaks from caring responsibilities.
From launching their own graphic novel, to producing a walking tour app, the young producers of ArtBoss continue to develop their skills in arts, gain experience working within the creative industries and, more importantly, they are able to have fun. They can attend the ArtBoss group without fear of stigma or having to explain themselves or talk about their own circumstances, they are able to leave all that at the door and just be young creatives, engaging in art and culture.
We are only able to continue our work with your support, please make a donation today to support OneRen and our essential projects like ArtBoss.
