Her-story: Hannah Lavery & Heather Parry

Returning to Paisley with new books that reinforce their place at the forefront of contemporary Scottish writing are two writers keen to shed light on hidden women’s experiences and make their voices heard. Acclaimed poet and playwright Hannah Lavery’s collection, Unwritten Woman, is a chilling re-telling of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that re-directs our focus onto the women in the story, who were previously resigned to the shadows. Fiction and non-fiction writer Heather Parry introduces Carrion Crow, a gothic Edwardian novel set in a London attic that centres on a destructive mother-daughter relationship. Dealing with themes of control, confinement, and otherness, this haunting narrative questions what it means to be a ‘proper’ woman. This event will be chaired by the award-winning broadcaster and author Gemma Cairney, whose own project, The Immortal Sisterhood, tells the forgotten stories of six remarkable women from history.
