Home(sick) with Victoria McNulty & Selali Fiamanya

For the final event in our Life’s Fundamentals strand, we look at the theme of Home and Belonging with two Glasgow writers who know a thing or two about finding your place. Former Paisley Book Festival writer in residence, Victoria McNulty, returns with Parables, a meditation on homesickness following a journey she took through Ireland to explore her own family’s history. Also known in Celtic languages as Cianalas or Hiraeth (in Gaelic and Welsh), homesickness is shown in Victoria’s work to be a multi-faceted process which is as much about self as it is about place. Glasgow-based doctor turned writer Selali Fiamanya’s powerful debut novel, Before We Hit the Ground, is an astounding testimony to the idea that finding yourself is intrinsically linked to where you are. It is told through the eyes of a young man struggling to reconcile his queer identity whilst navigating his mixed cultural heritage between Glasgow and Accra in Ghana.
