Author Event: Louise Turner - Writing Sparta: Myth and Reality in the Ancient World

Join Lochwinnoch-based author and archaeologist Dr Louise Turner as she celebrates the release of her third novel, Underworld – Part 1, published by Lairdside Press.

Underworld – Part 1 is the first instalment in Louise’s new historical fantasy series, A Black Ship Into Hades.  Its release is quite a departure for Louise, whose historical novels Fire & Sword and The Gryphon at Bay were set in late medieval Renfrewshire and based on real historical figures and actual events.

Moving between modern England and ancient Sparta, Underworld- Part 1 follows the trials faced by Lysander, a young Spartan saved from death in the ancient past and trafficked into the modern world. He must escape his captors and find Lucy Whitelaw, a young woman chosen by the ancient gods to help him.

Louise will speak about her book and the challenges she faced when writing about the Ancient Spartans. Considered enigmatic by their contemporaries, they’ve been misunderstood and misrepresented ever since. She’ll also reveal some interesting and obscure insights into the Spartans that she discovered during her extensive research. Copies of Underworld- Part 1 will be available for purchase on the day. Admission is free, with light refreshments provided.
